Ocerians Mark Fifth Anniversary of Fr. John Chachu, SJ

On 22nd July 2026, the Ocerian community marked the fifth anniversary of the death of Fr. John Chachu, SJ, who served as Headmaster of Ocer Campion Jesuit College from 2016 to 2021.

The day began with lessons as usual. At 3:00 p.m., students, teachers, and other members of the school community gathered in Blessed Seelos Chapel for a memorial Mass in honour of the late Fr. Chachu. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Meyo, SJ, the current Headmaster, assisted by Fr. Isaac Kiyaka, SJ, the school Chaplain.

Providentially, the Church was also celebrating the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene on the same day. The readings, especially the Gospel, proclaimed the joyful message of Christ’s Resurrection. Thus, while the congregation had gathered to remember a departed member of the community, the liturgy directed their attention to the triumph of life over death—a striking and meaningful coincidence.

In his homily, Fr. Meyo reflected on this connection and reminded the congregation that death is not the final word; eternal life is. He noted that the anniversary of Fr. Chachu’s passing, occurring on the feast of the saint who first proclaimed the Resurrection of Jesus, was a fitting reminder of Christian hope. The faithful were encouraged to choose hope over despair and life over death, and to express this conviction through concrete acts of love, compassion, and care for both one another and creation.

After the Mass, the congregation proceeded to the school cemetery, where Fr. Chachu is buried. Prayers were offered, holy water was sprinkled, and incense was burned in a solemn moment that united the mystery of death with the sacred rituals of the Church, whose enduring message is that death has been overcome through the Resurrection.

May the soul of Fr. John Chachu, SJ, rest in the eternal peace of the Resurrection. Amen.
