Ocer in the Calm and Business of the Holidays

It has been a week since Ocerians left the school for the August break. Although the usually lively campus is relatively calm, Ocer has not gone completely silent. Construction projects are progressing, while students and teachers continue to represent the school in activities both at home and abroad.

Within the school, work has been completed on two new student latrines. The project, which has taken slightly more than two months, has finally come to an end. The new facilities are expected to be ready for use when students return in September.

The school kitchen has also recorded progress with the completion of Phase I of a project aimed at improving its cooking facilities. Smoke has long been a major challenge in the kitchen, prompting plans to install improved stoves and chimneys. It is hoped that the work completed so far will significantly improve the working environment for the kitchen staff.

The farm, too, has been busy. At the center of attention is the construction of a two-storey structure for goats, which is now in its final stages. Come Term III, the goats will be looking forward to moving into their new home on the upper floor. Up there, perhaps, there will be no more cries!

Meanwhile, the holiday has not stopped Ocerians from taking part in activities beyond the school grounds.

As the break began, a team of students, accompanied by two teachers, Mr. Atyang George and Mr. Afeku Ferdinand, travelled to Germany as part of the school's exchange programme.

Now in its second year, the programme has strengthened ties between Ocer and its partner school in Dresden. Ocerians have previously travelled to Dresden, with students from the German school subsequently visiting Uganda.

Closer to home, the Ocer Debating Club (ODES) is currently in Mbiji District taking part in a national-level debating competition. The Ocerians are putting their debating skills to the test against some of the best students in the country. We wish the ODES team every success as they represent Ocer on the national stage.

So, while the corridors of Ocer may be quieter during the August holiday, the school continues to move forward—with construction underway, partnerships growing and Ocerians keeping the school’s name alive beyond its gates.
