Football: S2 Silence Their Teachers
Updated: 5 days ago

The evening of Friday, October 16, witnessed a long-awaited settling of scores as the S2 students took on members of staff in a football showdown that had been brewing for some time. A war of words, reminiscent of boxers trading verbal punches before stepping into the ring, had been simmering for weeks. At last, it was time to let the feet do the talking!

The staff, who have made the netball court their regular training ground, had been boasting rather loudly that the S2 students were no match for them. Confident of their abilities, they threw down the gauntlet. The S2, apparently not in the habit of declining football invitations, accepted the challenge wholeheartedly.

But where, one wondered, did the staff's confidence come from?
Well, since embarking on regular evening training sessions at their home ground, the teachers have registered notable improvements. Some have become more skillful dribblers, while others have developed greater stamina and confidence on the pitch. Perhaps these improvements had gone to their heads, convincing them that no opponent could stand in their way.
They were about to discover otherwise!
A Game that Lived Up to Expectations
The match kicked off at 5 p.m., and the staff wasted no time demonstrating that they had not been spending their evenings merely chasing shadows. They dribbled, headed, chested and passed the ball with impressive accuracy and coordination. Within minutes, they had scored the opening goal!

The enormous crowd of spectators, most of whom appeared to have thrown their weight behind the S2, watched in growing anxiety. Had the teachers finally found the perfect classroom in which to teach their students a lesson? Was this going to be one of those rare occasions when the students would leave the pitch with homework?

Fortunately for the S2 faithful, the story was far from over.
Like bees whose hive has been disturbed, the students suddenly sprang into action, buzzing across the pitch with renewed purpose. They pressed hard, moved swiftly and began to unsettle the staff, who seemed increasingly unsure of what had hit them. Before long, the S2 had found the equalizer!

And then came the moment when talent and skill began to speak louder than the pre-match boasts.
The staff certainly had their moments, but the S2 were beginning to make their superiority increasingly apparent. Their possession, agility, coordination and attacking play left the teachers struggling to keep up. Whatever lessons the staff had intended to teach, the students were proving rather quick learners.

By the end of the first half, the S2 had turned the game around, leading 2–1. Their supporters erupted in jubilation, celebrating as though the school had just won a national championship. On the staff's side, meanwhile, the mood had become considerably less cheerful.

The Teachers Get a Football Lesson
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with the S2 maintaining their momentum and outclassing the staff in several departments of the game. The teachers fought on bravely, but their students appeared determined to ensure that this particular lesson would not be forgotten in a hurry.

When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard told the story: S2 3–1 Staff.
What a game!
The result was a clear reminder that confidence, however loudly expressed, does not always translate into victory. The staff may have made significant progress on their beloved netball court, but Friday's encounter showed that there is still some work to be done before they can confidently take on serious football opposition. Perhaps a few more evening sessions are in order—along with some tactical discussions and, who knows, a little soul-searching!
The S2, for their part, had every reason to celebrate. Many had watched their teachers train in the evenings and dismissed the sessions as little more than opportunities to sweat, burn a few calories and work up an appetite for posho. Friday's match, however, proved that the staff's efforts were not entirely for the benefit of their appetites. They could play, after all! The students simply had to work hard to earn their victory.

Kudos to the S2 for a well-deserved win, and kudos to the staff for showing that their evening football sessions are no laughing matter. Though the scoreboard favored the students, the teachers deserve credit for taking on the challenge and giving their opponents a proper contest.

And perhaps that is the most important result of all. Beyond the goals, the missed chances, the cheers and the inevitable disappointment, the match brought the OCJC community together in a spirit of healthy competition. May the banter continue, the football improve and the bonds of our one OCJC family grow ever stronger.

As for a rematch? The staff may need a little more time on the training ground. The S2, meanwhile, will probably be happy to let their victory do the talking!
